OHIO'S TRANSMISSION SERVICE EXPERTS

Transmission problems rarely start as a full failure. It's often a slight hesitation before a gear engages, a rougher shift than usual or a transmission that seems to hunt for the right gear. Catching these symptoms early and addressing them correctly is the difference between a fluid service and a rebuild. At Pickups Plus Cars, transmission service is part of our drivetrain services and broader engine and drivetrain work at both our Lewis Center and Hilliard locations.

We've been servicing and repairing transmissions for 25+ years, and our approach is the same every time: diagnose first, then recommend. We don't replace transmissions when a fluid service will address the issue, and we don't do fluid services when the damage is already done. You'll get a straight assessment of what your transmission actually needs and what it will cost before any work begins.

EVERY STAGE OF TRANSMISSION CARE

From routine fluid maintenance to full rebuilds, we handle the complete range of transmission service and repair for automatic and manual transmissions

Transmission Fluid Service

Transmission fluid lubricates, cools, and cleans the internal components of the transmission. Over time it breaks down, collects contaminants, and loses its ability to protect the components it's supposed to be maintaining. We perform fluid flushes and filter replacements as routine maintenance, and recommend intervals based on your vehicle's actual use rather than a generic mileage number.

Transmission Diagnostics

Slipping gears, rough or delayed shifts, unusual noises, and warning lights are all transmission symptoms that require a proper diagnostic before any repair is recommended. We use computerized scanning tools alongside a physical inspection and, when needed, a test drive to confirm the cause. A transmission that gets misdiagnosed costs the owner significantly more in the long run than one that gets diagnosed correctly the first time.

Transmission Repair

When a transmission has a specific component failure, such as a worn clutch pack, failing solenoid, or damaged valve body, targeted repair is often the right approach. We assess whether the transmission is a good candidate for repair based on its overall condition, mileage, and the nature of the failure. Not every transmission issue requires a rebuild or replacement, and we won't recommend one when a repair will hold.

Transmission Rebuilds & Replacement

When a transmission has extensive internal damage or wear beyond the point of targeted repair, a rebuild or replacement is the correct call. A rebuild restores the transmission to correct specifications using new or remanufactured components. A replacement with a remanufactured unit is sometimes the more practical option depending on the vehicle and the failure. We'll give you an honest comparison of both options and our recommendation based on your specific situation.

YOU NEED TRANSMISSION SERVICE IF:

  • Your transmission slips, hesitates, or shifts roughly between gears
  • You notice a delay before the transmission engages when shifting from park
  • Your transmission fluid is dark, burnt-smelling, or hasn't been changed in over 30,000 miles
  • You have a transmission warning light on or a check engine code related to transmission function
  • You tow regularly and haven't had your transmission fluid serviced in the past two years

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT TRANSMISSION

  • What are the first signs my transmission is going bad?

The earliest signs are usually subtle: a slight hesitation before the transmission engages when you shift out of park, a rougher shift between gears than you're used to, or a transmission that seems to search for the right gear at highway speed. Slipping, where the engine revs but the vehicle doesn't accelerate proportionally, is a more serious symptom that means the transmission needs attention soon. Any of these are worth getting diagnosed before they develop into something more expensive.
  • Can I drive with a slipping transmission?

Not for long. A slipping transmission puts additional stress on already worn components and accelerates the damage. What might be a fluid service or a targeted repair today can become a full rebuild if you continue driving on it. If your transmission is slipping, get it inspected as soon as possible. The cost difference between catching it early and waiting is significant.
  • How often should transmission fluid be changed?

Most manufacturers recommend every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, but that interval shortens considerably for vehicles that tow, idle frequently, or operate in extreme temperatures. Transmission fluid that's been neglected long enough turns dark, develops a burnt smell, and loses its ability to protect internal components. If you're not sure when your fluid was last changed, bring it in and we'll assess the condition and give you a straight answer on whether it needs to be serviced.
  • Is it better to rebuild or replace a failing transmission?

It depends on the vehicle, the mileage, and the nature of the failure. A rebuild restores the existing transmission to correct specifications and is often the better option on a vehicle that's otherwise in good condition. A remanufactured replacement unit can be the more practical choice when the vehicle is high mileage or the failure is extensive. We'll give you an honest comparison of both options and a clear recommendation based on your specific situation, not a default answer.
  • Does towing affect my transmission?

Yes, significantly. Towing puts more thermal load on the transmission than almost any other driving condition. The transmission runs hotter, the fluid breaks down faster, and internal components wear more quickly. If you tow regularly, your transmission fluid should be serviced more frequently than the standard interval, and a transmission temperature gauge or cooler is worth considering if you're towing heavy loads consistently. We can assess your setup and tell you what's appropriate for how you use the vehicle.
