Most factory head units deliver 15 to 25 watts RMS per channel, which sounds fine at low volume but falls apart the moment you turn it up. When a head unit is pushed too hard, the signal distorts. That distortion damages tweeters and mid-range speakers faster than loud, clean audio ever would. An external amplifier delivers clean, consistent power that protects your speakers and produces noticeably better sound. The installation matters just as much as the amp itself: bad wiring, a poor ground, or a misconfigured gain setting will introduce noise and undercut everything the amp is supposed to do

We have been installing amplifiers across Central Ohio for over 25 years, on setups ranging from a single mono block for a subwoofer to four- and five-channel builds that power full component speaker systems. We set gain by signal measurement and size all wiring to the amp's actual draw, which prevents distortion, overheating, and damage to your speakers. Both our Lewis Center and Hilliard locations handle amp installs as part of our sound system services. Mono Amplifiers for Subwoofers

A mono amplifier is designed specifically to power a subwoofer, delivering high current output at the low impedance loads subwoofers present. We select the amplifier based on the subwoofer's power handling and impedance, then wire and tune the system so the subwoofer receives clean power within its rated range.

Multi-Channel Amplifiers

Multi-channel amplifiers power two or four speaker channels with cleaner output than a factory head unit can provide. A quality four-channel amp installed to door and rear speakers produces noticeably better staging and clarity than the same speakers running off factory amplification. We match channel count and power output to the speaker set being driven.

Class D Amplifiers

Class D amplifiers are significantly more efficient than older Class AB designs, converting more of their power supply into audio output and generating less heat. This matters in vehicle installations where heat management and current draw are real constraints. Most modern car audio amplifiers are Class D or Class D variants. We select amplifier topology based on the application and the vehicle's electrical system.

Gain Matching and Tuning

Gain matching sets the amplifier's sensitivity to the head unit's output level, preventing distortion without wasting power. This is done correctly with a signal at the clipping threshold of the head unit, not by ear at high volume. We also set crossover points so the amplifier only passes the frequencies each speaker is designed to handle, which reduces distortion and improves system efficiency.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT AMPS

  • Does my car really need an amplifier if I just want better sound?

    If you have upgraded speakers, almost certainly yes. Factory head units typically deliver 15 to 25 watts RMS per channel regardless of what the specification sheet claims. That is adequate to power cheap factory speakers but it clips quickly on better aftermarket speakers, which introduces distortion. A properly matched amplifier gives your upgraded speakers the clean power they need to perform correctly.
  • What size power wire does my amplifier installation need?

    Power wire gauge depends on the amplifier's total power draw and the length of the run from the battery. A general guideline: a 500-watt amplifier needs at minimum 4-gauge power wire for runs up to about 15 feet, while a 1000-watt amplifier needs 1/0 or 2-gauge depending on run length. Undersized wire causes voltage drop under load, which produces compression and can cause the amplifier to go into protection mode. We size power wire correctly for every install.
  • What is the difference between Class AB and Class D?

    Class AB amplifiers are the traditional design: they are linear but waste a portion of their power supply as heat. Class D amplifiers use a switching design that is much more efficient, converting most of the power supply into audio output. For car audio, where space, heat, and current draw are real constraints, Class D is the dominant technology. The sound quality difference between modern Class D and Class AB amplifiers is minimal at the component levels we work with.
  • Can a second amplifier be added to a system that already has one?

    Yes. Multi-amplifier systems are common, especially when you want separate dedicated amplification for subwoofers and speakers. The main considerations are available power from the vehicle's electrical system, available mounting space, and signal routing from the head unit. We will assess your current system and tell you whether adding an amplifier makes sense and what additional electrical upgrades, if any, the vehicle needs to support it.
  • How long does an amplifier installation take?

    A single amplifier install with power wiring from the battery, signal wiring from the head unit, and proper mounting and tuning typically takes two to four hours depending on the vehicle and where components are located. Multi-amplifier builds or installs that include running signal wiring to multiple speaker locations take longer. We will give you a time estimate when you bring the vehicle in.
