    BATTERY TESTING & REPLACEMENT

    A slow start doesn't automatically mean a bad battery. It could be the alternator, a parasitic drain, corroded terminals, or a battery that's simply at the end of its service life. Replacing a battery when the alternator is the actual problem means the new battery fails in the same way, and you're back in the same situation a month later. We test the battery and the charging system before recommending any replacement, so the fix addresses what's actually wrong.

    Battery service is available at both our Lewis Center and Hilliard locations without an extended wait. Ohio winters are hard on batteries. Cold temps increase the load on the system and accelerate the failure of batteries that are already weakening. We include a battery check as part of routine maintenance visits, so if you haven't had one recently, it's worth scheduling before a cold morning makes the decision for you.

    WHAT BATTERY SERVICE INVOLVES

    Battery service isn't just swapping a battery. Here's what we check and why each step matters before anything is replaced.

    Battery Testing

    We load-test the battery to measure its actual capacity under real operating conditions. A battery can show a normal voltage reading at rest while failing to hold a charge under the load of starting the engine. The load test catches this. We also check cold cranking amps (CCA) against the battery's rated spec and the vehicle's requirement, which is particularly important on trucks and vehicles with larger engines.

    Charging System Testing

    The alternator charges the battery while the engine is running. If the alternator isn't producing adequate voltage, a new battery will drain quickly and the starting problems continue. We test the charging system output and inspect the charging circuit to confirm the alternator is doing its job. A charging system test takes a few minutes and rules out the most common reason a new battery fails to fix the problem.

    Battery Replacement

    When the battery needs to be replaced, we install the correct battery for the vehicle's specifications: the right group size, cold cranking amps, and reserve capacity for what the vehicle demands. On vehicles with start-stop systems or advanced electronics, battery registration may be required after replacement so the system recognizes the new battery and manages it correctly. We handle that as part of the install.

    Terminal & Connection Service

    Corroded battery terminals increase resistance in the circuit, which causes hard starts and can accelerate battery wear. We clean terminals as part of battery service and apply protective coating to prevent corrosion from returning. Loose or damaged battery cables are also checked. A battery that's otherwise in good condition can cause starting problems if the connections are compromised.

    COMMON BATTERY SERVICE QUESTIONS

    • How do I know if it's the battery or the alternator?

      The symptoms can look similar, but there's a reliable way to tell. We test both the battery and the charging system. A battery that fails the load test but shows a charging system in spec is a battery issue. A battery that tests fine, but the alternator isn't producing adequate voltage, is a charging system issue. Without testing both, you're guessing, and replacing the wrong component is an expensive and frustrating way to find out.

    • How long does a car battery typically last?

      Most batteries last 3 to 5 years under normal conditions. Ohio winters shorten that range for batteries that are already weakening, since cold temperatures reduce a battery's ability to deliver cranking amps. If your battery is approaching 4 years old and you're noticing slower starts, it's worth having it load-tested before winter rather than waiting to find out it's failed on a cold morning.

    • Can you replace the battery while I wait?

      In most cases, yes. Battery replacement is typically a quick job. If your vehicle requires battery registration after replacement, which some newer vehicles with start-stop systems or advanced battery management do, we handle that as part of the service. Call ahead if you want to confirm availability.

    • My battery keeps dying even after I replaced it. What's causing that?

      The most common causes are a failing alternator that isn't keeping the battery charged, a parasitic drain (something drawing current when the vehicle is off), or a battery that was installed without registration on a vehicle that requires it. We test the charging system and can diagnose parasitic drains. If you've replaced a battery and it keeps failing, bring the vehicle in and we'll identify the actual source of the problem.
