SOUND SYSTEM UPGRADES

Your car may boast a 200W Premium Sound System, but that only describes its peak power, not the continuous RMS output the system actually delivers. Most factory amplifiers put out 15 to 20 watts RMS per channel. The speakers are built to match, with paper cones, lightweight magnets, and enclosures designed around door panel aesthetics rather than acoustic performance. The result is a system that sounds acceptable at low volume and congested at anything above 60 percent. Understanding the weakest link in your current setup is the starting point for any worthwhile upgrade. Sometimes it's the speakers. Sometimes it's the amplifier. Sometimes it starts with the head unit and works outward.

Full System Builds

A full system build typically includes a new head unit, amplifier, upgraded speakers, and a subwoofer, all matched to work together. We design the system around the vehicle's interior and the customer's listening preferences rather than selling a package from a shelf. Component selection, wiring quality, and tuning after the install all affect the end result. We do all three.

Speaker Upgrades

In many vehicles, replacing the factory speakers with quality aftermarket components makes the single biggest improvement for the money. Factory speakers use paper cones and lightweight magnets that degrade over time and cannot handle clean amplification. Aftermarket speakers use better materials and are built to handle more power without distortion. Speaker upgrades can be done with or without changing the head unit or adding an amplifier.

Amplifier Installation

Factory head units typically output 15 to 25 watts of real power per channel, regardless of what the spec sheet says. An aftermarket amplifier delivers clean, consistent power at levels the speakers can actually use. This reduces distortion and improves the overall sound floor of the system. Proper amplifier installation includes correctly sized power and ground wiring and gain matching to the source unit.

Head Unit Upgrades

A new head unit is the command center of your audio system. Modern aftermarket units add Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, improved sound processing, Bluetooth streaming, and backup camera display. Proper installation includes the correct dash kit, wiring harness adapter, and antenna adapter for your specific vehicle so the result looks factory-installed rather than retrofitted.

Subwoofer Installation

Frequencies below roughly 80 Hz require a dedicated subwoofer to reproduce correctly. Factory systems roll off bass significantly and what remains often comes from door speakers that are not designed to handle it. A properly matched subwoofer and amplifier add the low-end foundation that most factory systems are missing without overpowering the rest of the audio.

Wiring and Power Upgrades

Wiring quality matters as much as components. Undersized power wire starves an amplifier during peaks and produces audible compression. Poor ground connections cause alternator noise. We use correctly gauged wire for every install and route it properly through the vehicle. This is the unglamorous part of audio work that separates systems that perform over time from those that develop problems.

System Tuning

Installing components correctly is necessary but not sufficient. A system needs to be tuned: crossover points set so each speaker handles the frequencies it is designed for, gain levels matched to prevent clipping, and EQ adjusted for the vehicle's interior acoustic characteristics. We tune every system we build rather than leaving it at default settings and calling the job complete.

Factory System Integration

Not every customer wants to replace their factory head unit. We can integrate amplifiers and upgraded speakers into a factory system using line-output converters and signal processors that work with the original head unit's output. This approach has tradeoffs compared to a full aftermarket build, and we will explain them honestly so you can decide what makes sense for your situation.

  • Where should I start if I want to improve my car's audio?

    It depends on what your system currently has and where the biggest weaknesses are. For most factory systems, the speakers are the weakest link and replacing them produces the largest improvement per dollar. If you also want more power and better sound processing, adding an amplifier and head unit makes sense as a next step. We will assess your current system and tell you what upgrade path gives you the best return.
  • Do I need to replace my head unit to upgrade my speakers or add an amplifier?

    Not necessarily. Speakers can be upgraded independently without changing the head unit. An amplifier can also be added to a factory system using a line-output converter. That said, factory head units have limitations in output level and signal quality that become more apparent as the rest of the system improves. We will be honest about where those limitations are and whether they are relevant to what you want to achieve.
  • What is gain matching and why does it matter?

    Gain matching is the process of setting the amplifier's input sensitivity to match the output level of the head unit. If the gain is set too high, the amplifier clips the signal, which produces harsh distortion and can damage speakers. If it is set too low, you are not using the amplifier's available power. Proper gain matching is done with a multimeter or by ear at the signal threshold, not by turning a knob to an arbitrary position.
  • How much does a full car audio system build cost?

    It depends on the components selected and the complexity of the vehicle's installation. Entry-level builds with mid-tier components cost considerably less than high-end builds using premium speaker sets, multi-channel amplifiers, and custom subwoofer enclosures. Every job is quoted individually. We will tell you what a realistic budget looks like for your goals and what you can expect at different spending levels.
  • Can you improve my audio without losing my factory features like steering wheel controls?

    Yes. Steering wheel control interfaces are available for most vehicles and allow aftermarket head units to maintain factory steering wheel audio controls. We use the correct interface module for your specific vehicle and test it before the job is complete. Maintaining these features is a standard part of how we approach head unit installs.
