WHAT YOUR FACTORY HEAD UNIT IS MISSING

The head unit (your vehicle's built-in screen and stereo controls) is built to match the trim level at the time of production. For most vehicles, that means no wireless CarPlay or Android Auto, limited camera input support, minimal audio processing, and Bluetooth that handles calls but struggles with audio quality. An aftermarket head unit addresses all of that, adding proper smartphone integration, better digital signal processing, and the ability to work correctly with external amplifiers and cameras.

The catch is that fitting one correctly requires more than pulling out the old unit and sliding in the new one. A dash kit, wiring harness adapter, and antenna adapter are all required for an install that looks and behaves like it belongs there. We've been fitting aftermarket head units in Central Ohio vehicles for over 25 years, using the correct components for each specific make, model, and trim so none of that gets lost. Both our Lewis Center and Hilliard locations handle head unit installation as part of our sound system services.

HEAD UNIT INSTALLATION SERVICES

We install single-DIN, double-DIN, and large-format touchscreen head units with full vehicle-specific integration so the result looks and functions like factory.

Double-DIN Touchscreen Units

Most aftermarket head unit upgrades use a double-DIN touchscreen unit, which offers a large display for navigation, media controls, backup camera display, and smartphone mirroring. We fit the correct vehicle-specific dash kit so the unit fills the opening cleanly and does not rattle or shift. Touchscreen units are available from several manufacturers and we will recommend specific models based on your vehicle and feature priorities.

Apple CarPlay & Android Auto

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto mirror your phone's navigation, music, and messaging interfaces on the head unit's display, controlled via touch or voice. Most modern aftermarket head units support both. If your factory head unit does not support CarPlay or Android Auto, a head unit upgrade is the primary solution. We configure both features during installation and test them before the vehicle leaves the shop.

Wiring Harness & Dash Kit Integration

A wiring harness adapter converts the aftermarket unit's connector to the vehicle's factory plug, preserving factory wiring and allowing the unit to be removed without cutting wires. Dash kits provide the correct trim surround for the specific vehicle make and model. Using the correct harness and kit is not optional: the wrong harness causes feature loss and the wrong kit produces a visible gap or rattle.

Backup Camera Integration

Aftermarket head units with a camera input can display a backup camera feed automatically when the vehicle is placed in reverse. We wire the camera trigger so the display switches seamlessly. If the vehicle already has a factory backup camera, we can often integrate that existing camera into the new head unit using the correct adapter, avoiding the cost of replacing working hardware.

YOU NEED THIS IF:

  • Your factory head unit does not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
  • You want to integrate a backup camera display into a touchscreen
  • Your factory screen is small, unresponsive, or no longer functioning correctly
  • You want better Bluetooth audio quality and connection reliability than your current unit provides
  • You want to upgrade the head unit as part of a broader audio system build

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Will an aftermarket head unit work with my steering wheel audio controls?

Yes, with a steering wheel control interface module. These adapters translate your factory steering wheel control signals into a format the aftermarket head unit understands. The correct module depends on your specific vehicle, and not all vehicles are supported. We will check compatibility for your vehicle before recommending a head unit. Maintaining steering wheel controls is a standard part of how we approach these installs.
  • Can I keep my factory amplifier after installing a new head unit?

This depends on how your factory audio system is configured. Some factory amplifiers receive a processed signal from the head unit that does not work well with an aftermarket unit. In those cases, a line-level signal processor or a system-specific integration harness is needed to maintain the factory amp. We will assess your specific setup and tell you whether keeping the factory amplifier is practical or whether a cleaner approach involves replacing it.
  • What is the difference between wired and wireless CarPlay?

Wired CarPlay requires a USB cable connection between your iPhone and the head unit. Wireless CarPlay connects over Wi-Fi so you can use CarPlay without a physical cable. Some head units support wireless; others require a cable. If wireless CarPlay is important to you, we will confirm the specific unit you are considering supports it before the sale.
  • Will an aftermarket head unit look out of place in my dashboard?

Not with the right dash kit. Vehicle-specific dash kits are designed to match the contours and trim lines of a particular vehicle's dash opening, producing a finished look that most people cannot distinguish from factory. Some vehicles have unusual dash configurations that limit options, and we will tell you upfront if your vehicle is one of them. We do not use universal kits that leave visible gaps.
  • How long does a head unit installation take?

A standard head unit installation with dash kit, harness adapter, and antenna adapter typically takes two to three hours. More complex installs, such as vehicles with factory amplifiers requiring signal processors or large OEM screen replacements, take longer. We will give you an accurate estimate when we see the vehicle.
