    Most factory vehicle interiors are underlit. The dome light is dim, the footwells are dark, and the reading lights barely cover the area they're supposed to. LED upgrades and ambient lighting setups change this significantly — a well-done interior lighting install makes the cabin feel more finished and more functional without looking overdone. The difference between a clean result and a sloppy one comes down almost entirely to the wiring. LED lighting draws very little current, but that doesn't mean the wiring can be treated casually. Exposed connections, undersized wire, and incorrect circuit taps create problems that show up months later.

    We handle interior lighting upgrades and repairs at both our Lewis Center and Hilliard locations as part of our interior services. Every installation is routed and connected cleanly to the appropriate circuit for the application, with no exposed wiring or connections that will work loose over time.     Interior lighting work ranges from a single bulb replacement to a full ambient setup. Here's what we handle and how we approach each type of job.

    LED Dome & Overhead Upgrades

    Factory dome and reading lights use incandescent bulbs that produce less light and run hotter than LEDs. LED swaps deliver brighter output, lower power draw, and cleaner light quality. We confirm the correct spec before installing — incorrect LED drivers cause flickering on vehicles with body control modules that expect a specific circuit load.

    Ambient & Footwell Lighting

    Ambient lighting adds illumination to footwells, door panels, and accent areas of the cabin. Done well, the result is a more finished interior that's noticeably more comfortable at night without being distracting while driving. We run wiring through interior panels cleanly, connect to the appropriate circuit, and test the lighting level before the vehicle leaves.

    Dashboard & Instrument Lighting

    Dashboard and instrument cluster issues typically show up as dim gauges, warning lights that won't go out, or failed display screens. Some are simple bulb or LED replacements behind the cluster. Others involve the cluster or display itself and require a different approach. We diagnose the specific fault before recommending any repair.

    Lighting Repairs

    If an existing interior light has stopped working, the cause is usually one of three things: a burned-out bulb, a blown fuse, or a wiring issue. We diagnose which before replacing anything. A light that keeps burning out after bulb replacements has a wiring or load issue that needs to be addressed at the source. We find the actual cause rather than replacing parts until something works.

    COMMON INTERIOR LIGHTING QUESTIONS

    • Can I just swap my dome light bulb for an LED myself?

      On most vehicles, yes. It's a straightforward swap. The caveat is that some vehicles with body control modules are sensitive to the load a lighting circuit draws. An LED that draws significantly less current than the original bulb can cause the BCM to interpret it as a burned-out bulb, resulting in flickering or a warning indicator. We use LED drivers or load resistors where needed to prevent this. If you've already tried an LED swap and it flickers, that's usually the reason.

    • Will adding ambient lighting affect my vehicle's electrical system?

      Not if it's installed correctly. LED interior lighting draws minimal current, and a proper install uses the existing electrical system without overloading any circuits. Problems happen when lighting is added with shortcuts: tapping into the wrong circuit, using undersized wire, or leaving connections that won't hold. We route and connect all lighting installations to the appropriate power source for the application.

    • My interior light stays on when it should be off. What causes that?

      The most common causes are a door switch that's stuck or failed, a wiring issue keeping the circuit powered, or a timer that's set to stay on after the door closes. We diagnose the specific cause before recommending a fix. On older vehicles, dome light issues that seem random are often related to a door switch that's beginning to fail intermittently.

    • Can you add lighting to areas of the interior that don't currently have any?

      Yes. Footwells, door panels, under-dash areas, and cargo areas are all places we add lighting regularly. The approach depends on the vehicle and where you want the lighting. We assess the best wiring path and circuit connection for each application, and we route everything through the interior panels cleanly rather than leaving visible wire runs across the cabin.
