Pay attention to when it pulls. That one detail narrows the problem down faster than anything else, and most people never think to notice it. A truck that drifts steadily no matter what you’re doing is telling you something completely different than a truck that only yanks to one side when you get on the throttle. The first is almost always tires or alignment. The second points at your drivetrain, and it’s the one most shops check last.

Below is how to figure out which one you’ve got, starting with the free tests you can do yourself and working toward the drivetrain causes that get overlooked. We’ve chased a lot of these down over the years, and the diagnosis almost always comes back to a pattern the owner already noticed but didn’t know was significant.

First, rule out the pull that isn’t a problem

Before you chase anything, know that a slight drift to the right is often completely normal.

Roads are built with a crown, meaning the center sits higher than the edges so water drains off. On a normal right-lane American road, that crown gently encourages your truck to drift right. It’s why “car pulls to the right” is such a common complaint and “pulls to the left” is much less so.

The test: find a flat, empty stretch, an empty parking lot works, and drive straight with a light grip. If the drift disappears or reverses when you’re off a crowned road, that’s the road, not your truck. If it pulls the same way regardless of the surface, keep reading.

The timing test that tells you which system is failing

This is the most useful thing in this article. Pay attention to exactly when the pull shows up, because each answer points at a different set of parts.

  • It pulls constantly, at any speed, whether you’re accelerating, coasting, or braking. That’s tires or alignment. Start there.
  • It pulls only when you accelerate, and straightens out when you lift off. That’s the drivetrain, or engine and transmission mounts. This is the pattern that gets misdiagnosed.
  • It pulls only when you hit the brakes. That’s a brake problem, usually a sticking caliper or a collapsed brake hose on one side.
  • It pulls only in four-wheel drive, or only when turning in 4WD. That’s a 4WD system issue, and often it’s not a failure at all.
  • It started right after you hit a pothole or curb. Suspension or steering damage, and worth an inspection before anything else.

Write down which one matches your truck before you take it anywhere. In our experience, an owner who can say “it only does it under acceleration” saves an hour of diagnostic time and gets a more accurate answer.

Start with the cheap stuff, because it’s usually the cheap stuff

Being honest about the hierarchy here: most pulling complaints are not drivetrain problems. Check these first.

  • Tire pressure. A few PSI difference side to side is enough to cause a noticeable pull. This is free to check and fixes a surprising percentage of complaints.
  • Tire wear and tire conicity. Uneven wear pulls, and so does a defective tire with internal belt issues, even a brand new one. A quick way to test: swap the two front tires side to side. If the pull switches directions, you’ve found a bad tire, not an alignment problem.
  • Alignment. Camber and toe out of spec will pull the truck steadily. This is the most common real cause after tires, and any change to ride height from a lift or leveling kit throws it out.
  • Brakes. A caliper that isn’t releasing drags one side. Usually the pull shows up under braking, and often the wheel on that side runs noticeably hotter after a drive.
  • Worn suspension components. Tired bushings, ball joints, or a bad wheel bearing let the geometry shift under load.

If you’ve been through all of that and the truck still pulls, that’s when the drivetrain conversation starts.

How the drivetrain causes a pull

Here’s the part most articles skip. Your drivetrain delivers power to the wheels, and if it delivers that power unevenly, the truck steers itself. The tell, again, is that the pull is tied to throttle rather than being constant.

Worn CV joints or axles. On four-wheel-drive trucks, the front axles use CV joints to deliver power while still allowing the wheels to steer. As Continental explains, when one CV joint wears or develops internal play, it doesn’t rotate as smoothly as the other, and that creates inconsistent torque between the left and right wheels. Under hard acceleration the worn joint can bind slightly, and the truck pulls. Often you’ll also hear a clicking noise during tight turns, which is the classic worn-CV symptom.

Worn engine or transmission mounts. This one surprises people. Mounts hold the engine and transmission in position. When they wear out, the whole assembly shifts under torque load, which changes the angle of the axles coming out of it. That shift transfers force unevenly and shows up as a pull that appears exactly when you accelerate and disappears when you lift off.

Front differential problems. An open differential sends power to the wheel with the least resistance. If the internal gears are worn or damaged, power delivery between the two front wheels can go uneven enough to steer the truck.

Locking hub or actuator failure. Many modern 4WD trucks use an actuator system to engage and disengage the front wheels from the drivetrain. When one side engages and the other doesn’t, or one fails to fully disengage, you get uneven front-wheel drag. This can cause pulling and it often gets blamed on alignment for months before anyone checks the hubs.

Transfer case engagement issues. If the transfer case isn’t fully engaging or releasing 4WD, the front driveline can stay partially engaged when it shouldn’t be, which produces drag on one side and unusual handling.

The 4WD pull that isn’t actually broken

Worth separating out, because we get this question a lot and the answer is usually reassuring.

Most trucks use part-time four-wheel drive, which locks the front and rear axles to the same speed with no center differential to split the difference. That’s exactly what you want in snow or mud. On dry, high-traction pavement it causes a problem: when you turn, the front and rear axles need to travel different distances, and since they’re locked together, something has to give. The result is binding, which feels like the truck fighting you, lurching, or pulling through turns.

If your truck only does this in 4WD on dry pavement, especially while turning, nothing is broken. Part-time 4WD isn’t meant for high-traction surfaces. Take it out of 4WD on dry roads and the symptom should disappear. If it doesn’t, or if the binding happens in two-wheel drive, that’s when it’s worth having the transfer case and front hubs looked at.

Why this is worth chasing down

A pull is annoying, but the reason to fix it promptly is what it costs while you ignore it.

An uncorrected pull scrubs your tires sideways, and we’ve seen customers burn through a new set in well under 20,000 miles because they lived with a pull instead of diagnosing it. Beyond tires, a drivetrain issue that’s causing a pull is a drivetrain issue that’s getting worse. A worn CV joint eventually fails completely. A bad wheel bearing can seize. Neither is something you want happening at highway speed with a trailer behind you.

Common questions we get about a truck pulling to one side

Is it safe to drive a truck that pulls to one side?

For a mild, steady pull that you can easily correct with light steering, yes, in the short term, but get it diagnosed. If the pull is strong, sudden, changes under acceleration or braking, or comes with noises like clicking, grinding, or clunking, treat it as urgent. Those symptoms point to something that can fail rather than something that’s just out of adjustment, and a failure in the steering or drivetrain at speed is a serious problem.

Can an alignment fix a pull caused by the drivetrain?

No, and this is where people waste money. An alignment corrects suspension angles. If the actual cause is a worn CV joint, a failing hub actuator, or bad engine mounts, the alignment will read fine or be corrected to spec and the truck will still pull, because the alignment was never the problem. That’s exactly why we ask when the pull happens before recommending anything. A pull that only appears under throttle is not going to be solved by an alignment machine.

My truck started pulling after I installed a lift. What happened?

Almost certainly alignment, and it’s expected. Any change in ride height changes your suspension geometry and puts the alignment angles out of spec. An alignment is a required part of a lift or leveling kit install, not an optional add-on. If you’ve already had it aligned after the lift and it still pulls, the next things to check are whether the kit included the necessary correction components for that much lift, and whether the driveline angles ended up where they should be.
