No, your electric car does not need oil changes. There’s no engine oil, no oil filter, no spark plugs, no timing belt, and no exhaust system to rust out. That’s the answer most people come looking for, and it’s genuinely one of the best things about owning an EV. But here’s what nobody tells you at the dealership: skipping oil changes doesn’t mean your EV is maintenance-free. It means the maintenance moved somewhere else. Electric vehicles are dramatically heavier, they deliver torque instantly, and they’re nearly silent, and every one of those traits creates needs that a gas car simply doesn’t have. Here’s what your EV actually needs.

What EVs genuinely don’t need

Let’s clear the deck first, because the savings here are real.

An electric vehicle has no internal combustion engine, which eliminates a long list of routine services: oil and filter changes, spark plugs, air filters, fuel filters, timing belts, exhaust and muffler work, and emissions systems. An EV drivetrain has a fraction of the moving parts of a gas powertrain, so there’s simply less to wear out and less to service.

Brakes are the surprising one. Because EVs use regenerative braking as the primary way of slowing down, the motor does most of the stopping and the friction brakes get used far less. Brake pads on an EV routinely last much longer than on a comparable gas car.

But here’s the catch on that, and it’s something we tell every EV owner who comes in: brake rotors on an EV can develop surface rust from underuse. The friction brakes aren’t being scrubbed clean by regular use the way they are on a gas car. Pads that look fine can be sitting against rotors that need attention. Regular inspection still matters, even though you’re replacing pads less often.

The weight problem nobody warns you about

This is the single most important thing to understand about EV ownership, and it drives almost everything else on this list.

Electric vehicles are heavy. Not slightly heavier. Substantially heavier. Take the truck most Central Ohio drivers know best: a gas F-150 SuperCab with the 5.0-liter V8 weighs about 4,900 pounds, while the F-150 Lightning comes in upwards of 6,700 pounds. That’s nearly a full ton of additional weight, and it’s a fair representation of the pattern across the market, where EVs commonly run 20 to 30 percent heavier than their gas equivalents.

All that mass is carried by the same four contact patches. Every acceleration, every corner, every stop, every pothole is being absorbed by tires and suspension components that are working considerably harder than they would on a gas vehicle. That’s not a flaw in the vehicle. It’s just physics, and it means the maintenance priorities shift.

EV tires: not a marketing gimmick

The tires are where EV owners feel the difference first, usually when they need a new set way sooner than they expected.

Studies and tire manufacturers consistently find that EVs wear through tires roughly 20% faster than comparable gas cars. Two things cause it: the weight, and the instant torque. An electric motor delivers 100 percent of its power the moment you touch the pedal, and that shearing force on the tread is exactly what scrubs rubber off.

EV-specific tires exist to deal with this, and they’re a real engineering response, not a badge. They have:

  • Higher load ratings. You’ll see XL (extra load) or HL (high load) markings on the sidewall, with reinforced carcass construction to carry the battery weight without overheating or deforming.
  • Compounds built for torque. Rubber blends engineered to survive repeated high-torque launches instead of scrubbing away.
  • Low rolling resistance. Because rolling resistance directly costs you range, EV tires are tuned to preserve it.
  • Noise reduction. Many use foam liners inside the tread, because road noise that a gas engine used to mask stands out sharply in a silent cabin.

Here’s the number that matters most: according to Pirelli’s North America chief technical officer, a regular tire will wear roughly 5 to 20 percent faster than an EV-specific tire when it’s mounted on an EV. Putting standard tires on an electric vehicle to save money is a false economy. It costs you range, it costs you grip, and you’re back for another set sooner.

We stock and fit EV-appropriate tires matched to the specific vehicle and how it’s driven. And rotate them more often than you would on a gas car, closer to every 6,000 to 7,500 miles, because EVs are particularly hard on the driven axle.

Suspension has to be rated for the battery

This is the part most shops get wrong, and it’s where experience with EVs actually matters.

That extra thousand-plus pounds doesn’t just punish tires. It loads every bushing, ball joint, spring, and shock harder than the same component would see on a gas vehicle. EV curb weight accelerates wear in suspension components, and if an EV starts to wander, pull, or feel nervous over bumps, that’s worth an alignment check before the tires pay for it.

It also means that any suspension work on an EV has to be spec’d for the real weight of the vehicle. We offer EV-specific lift kits, coilovers, and lowering springs, and the critical part is making sure whatever goes on is rated for the load that particular vehicle actually puts on it. A component rated for a comparable gas SUV may simply be under-spec’d for the electric version of the same platform. We see people get this wrong, and the vehicle either rides badly or wears parts out early.

The upgrades EV owners actually come in for

Beyond maintenance, EVs have turned into some of the most personalized vehicles on the road, and a few upgrades are specific to what these vehicles are.

Active sound systems. This is the one people don’t know exists. Brands like Borla and Milltek make EV-specific active sound systems that give an electric vehicle an exhaust note without an exhaust. They tie into the vehicle’s electronics and produce real-time engine or exhaust sound through discreet external speakers, with the volume, pitch, and tone adjustable from a phone app. It’s one of the more genuinely interesting upgrades available for EVs right now, and it solves a real complaint: that these vehicles can feel a little characterless to drive.

Wheels. EVs take custom wheels the same as anything else, but fitment has extra wrinkles. Offset, bolt pattern, and load rating all have to match, and some EVs have additional constraints tied to brake caliper clearance or the aerodynamic covers the manufacturer fitted for range. Load rating in particular is not something to eyeball on a vehicle this heavy.

Wraps, tint, and PPF. Wraps, window tinting, paint protection film, body kits, and exterior lighting all work on EVs exactly as they do on any other vehicle. We’ve done plenty of this work on Teslas, Rivians, and Hummer EVs.

Why finding a shop that understands EVs matters

Plenty of shops will happily put a set of tires on your EV. Fewer will ask whether those tires are load-rated for the weight of the battery pack, or whether the suspension component they’re quoting is spec’d for an electric version of the platform, or whether the wheel you picked clears the calipers.

That’s the actual gap. An EV isn’t hard to work on, it’s just different, and the differences are specific and checkable. We’ve been doing this in Central Ohio since 1999, and we treat an electric vehicle the same way we treat everything else that comes through our Lewis Center and Hilliard shops: figure out what it actually needs, then do it right.

Do electric cars need oil changes?

Some EVs do have gearbox or reduction-drive fluid that may need service at long intervals, and they still have brake fluid, coolant for the battery thermal management system, and cabin air filters. So it’s not zero fluid maintenance, but the oil change as most people know it is gone entirely.

Is EV maintenance actually cheaper?

Generally yes, but the savings are smaller than the headlines suggest, because the money moves. You’ll save on oil changes, spark plugs, exhaust work, and brake pads, which is real. You’ll spend more on tires, and potentially more on suspension components over the life of the vehicle. The net is usually still in the EV’s favor, but going in expecting a maintenance-free car sets you up for a surprise when you’re buying your second set of tires at 25,000 miles.

Can any shop work on my electric vehicle?

For high-voltage battery and powertrain work, that’s typically dealer or specialist territory. For everything else, tires, wheels, suspension, brakes, alignments, wraps, tint, and audio, any competent shop can do the work, provided they understand the weight and torque differences and spec parts accordingly. That last part is where a lot of shops fall short, and it’s worth asking about before you hand over the keys.
