The honest answer is that every part has a typical lifespan, but the range is wide, and what actually determines where your vehicle lands in that range is how you drive and where you drive. A set of brake pads can last 25,000 miles or 70,000 depending entirely on the driver. This guide gives you the real numbers for the parts people ask about most, organized so you can tell at a glance whether something is due.

- Time parts degrade on a calendar whether you drive or not, because rubber and chemicals break down with age. Batteries, tires (yes, both), coolant, and wiper blades fall here. A low-mileage vehicle still needs these on schedule.
- Condition parts last until something specific wears out or fails, and the range is huge. Alternators, transmissions, and starters fall here. You watch for symptoms, not a number.
The parts that catch people off guard are the ones that live in two categories, like tires, which age out on time even if the tread looks fine.
Brakes: how long do brake pads last?
Brake pads are the part people ask about most, and the honest range is wide. Brake pads typically last anywhere from 25,000 to 70,000 miles, with most drivers landing somewhere around 40,000. The spread is enormous because braking is almost entirely driven by how and where you drive.
What moves you toward the short end:
- City and stop-and-go driving. Every stop wears the pads. Columbus traffic that keeps getting heavier is hard on brakes.
- Towing and hauling. More weight means more braking force and more heat.
- Aggressive braking. Late, hard stops eat pads faster than easing into them.
- Hilly terrain. Riding the brakes downhill builds heat and wear.
Rotors last longer, often through two sets of pads, but only if you replace pads before the metal backing scores them. Calipers and the master cylinder typically last 100,000 miles or more, usually only needing attention when they seize or leak, often around a second brake job rather than the first. Car battery: how long does a car battery last?
A car battery lasts about three to five years, and this one is mostly about time and temperature, not mileage. A battery in a garage-kept commuter and one in a truck that sits outside can be the same age and worlds apart in health.
What shortens a battery’s life:
- Extreme temperatures. Both heat and hard cold degrade batteries. Ohio delivers both across a year.
- Short trips. A battery that never gets a long enough drive to fully recharge lives a harder life. Lots of short hops around town is one of the worst patterns for battery health.
- Age itself. Even a lightly used battery chemically wears out.
Because it’s time-based, the smart move is to have the battery tested twice a year once it’s past the three-year mark, which most shops do free during other service. Dim headlights, a slow crank, or needing a jump are the warning signs, but a test catches a weak battery before it strands you in a parking lot in January.
Tires: how long do tires last?
Tires are the classic two-category part. By wear, a typical set lasts around 50,000 to 60,000 miles, though the range runs wide depending on the tire and the driver. But tires also age out on a calendar, and this is the part people miss.
Rubber degrades whether you drive on it or not, so tires should generally be inspected once they hit six years and replaced by ten years regardless of tread depth. A vehicle that sits, a second car, a truck used seasonally, can have beautiful tread on dangerously old tires. You can find the age in the DOT code on the sidewall, where the last four digits are the week and year of manufacture.
What shortens tire life: skipped rotations, bad alignment, underinflation, aggressive driving, and heavy loads. We see plenty of trucks come in having worn the inner edges off a set well before their mileage because an alignment got skipped after a lift or a pothole.
The rest of the vehicle, by typical lifespan

- Spark plugs: copper plugs 30,000 to 40,000 miles, iridium or platinum 60,000 to 100,000 miles or more. EVs don’t have them.

- Timing belt: 60,000 to 100,000 miles, and this one is critical. On interference engines, a failed timing belt can destroy the engine. Many newer vehicles use a timing chain instead, which typically lasts the life of the vehicle.

Does maintenance actually make parts last longer?
