What Are Ohio’s Window Tint Laws?

Before choosing a tint level, it’s worth knowing what’s actually legal in Ohio so you don’t end up with a citation or have to redo the job.

Ohio law under ORC 4513.241 sets the following standards for passenger vehicles:

• Front side windows must allow more than 50% of light in (50% VLT minimum). This is one of the more restrictive rules in the state and catches people off guard, a lot of customers come in wanting darker front windows and we have to explain why that’s not legal on a passenger car.
• Rear side windows and back window have no VLT restriction for SUVs, vans, and trucks. For standard passenger cars (sedans), the same 50% rule applies to all windows.
• Windshield tinting is only permitted on the top 5 inches as a non-reflective strip.
• Reflectivity: Ohio does not allow mirrored or metallic-appearance tints on any window.

A few practical notes from our experience: Ohio doesn’t require a tint certificate to be displayed in the vehicle, but having documentation of your film’s VLT percentage is smart if you’re ever questioned during a traffic stop. We provide that with every installation.

• Dyed film is the most affordable entry point. It reduces glare and adds privacy but does relatively little for heat rejection and can fade over time. Fine for someone on a tight budget who mainly wants the look.
• Carbon film is a step up: better heat rejection, no metallic content so it won’t interfere with signals, and it holds its color better over time. This is where most of our customers land.
• Ceramic film is the top tier. It offers the best heat and UV rejection, is signal-friendly, and carries a longer lifespan. It costs more upfront but customers who go ceramic rarely wish they’d gone cheaper. If you park outside regularly or spend a lot of time in the car, ceramic is worth the investment.

What to Expect at Our Shop

We install tint on all vehicle types: cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans. Most standard installations are completed the same day. We use precision-cut film to fit your specific make and model, which means cleaner edges and fewer chances of lifting or peeling over time compared to hand-cut applications.

We recommend waiting 24–48 hours before rolling your windows down after installation to let the film cure fully, especially in cooler weather.
