Aftermarket has a reputation problem it does not really deserve. The word just means any part that was not made by your vehicle’s original manufacturer, and that covers everything from a budget brake pad to a two-thousand-dollar suspension kit. On its own, the label tells you nothing about quality. What actually matters is the brand, the fit, and who installs it.

Whether you are repairing something or building the truck you have always wanted, understanding aftermarket parts helps you spend smart and skip the common traps. We do a lot of aftermarket parts installation for people who sourced their own parts, so we see up close what works and what does not. Here is what aftermarket parts actually are, how they stack up against OEM, and the two questions everyone asks: what they do to your warranty and whether insurance covers them.

What “Aftermarket” Actually Means Compared to OEM

An aftermarket part is simply a part made by a company other than the one that built your vehicle. OEM, which stands for original equipment manufacturer, means the part was made by or for the automaker, the same as what came on the vehicle from the factory. Both can be excellent. The difference is that aftermarket opens up a much wider range of price and capability, including upgrades the automaker does not offer at all. That range is exactly why the word covers such different things, from a basic replacement filter to a performance turbo kit.

The Main Types of Aftermarket Parts

It helps to break aftermarket parts into three buckets, because they serve very different purposes.

Replacement and repair parts. These are the everyday components that keep a vehicle running, like brake pads, filters, belts, and alternators. Quality aftermarket versions often match or beat OEM at a lower price, which is why independent shops use them constantly.

Performance parts. These are upgrades that change how the vehicle drives, like air intakes, exhaust systems, suspension components, and tuners. Most of these are things the factory simply does not offer, so aftermarket is the only way to get them. This is the heart of most performance parts builds.

Accessories and customization. These are the parts that change how a vehicle looks or functions day to day, like bed covers, running boards, lighting, wheels, and floor mats.

Aftermarket vs OEM: The Honest Tradeoffs

OEM parts give you a guaranteed fit, consistent quality, and the peace of mind of factory spec, but they usually cost more and only ever give you the stock setup. Aftermarket gives you a huge range of choice, the ability to save money or to outperform stock, and options the factory never made. The catch is that aftermarket quality varies wildly from one brand to the next, which is why brand reputation and correct fitment matter so much.

In our experience, the most common mistake is someone buying the absolute cheapest no-name part online and being surprised when it does not fit right or does not last. Aftermarket is not code for cheap, and it is not code for better either. A well-known brand with a good warranty is a different animal than a bargain-bin part, even when both are technically aftermarket.

Why Installation Matters as Much as the Part

A great part installed wrong is a bad part. That is not a sales pitch, it is just how this works. Fitment has to be confirmed against your exact vehicle, hardware has to be torqued correctly, wiring has to be clean, and some parts need follow-up work like a tune after an intake or an alignment after suspension. Many part warranties also require professional installation to stay valid.

This is why we confirm fitment against your year, make, and model before anything goes on the vehicle, and we tell you what the job involves before we start rather than halfway through. Customer-supplied parts occasionally have compatibility issues that are not obvious from the part number, and catching that up front saves everyone the headache.

Do Aftermarket Parts Void My Warranty?

This is the myth we correct most often, so here is the clear version. No, aftermarket parts do not automatically void your factory warranty. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a dealer cannot void your coverage simply because you installed an aftermarket part, and the FTC states plainly that your warranty stays in effect when you use aftermarket parts.

There is one fair exception. If a specific aftermarket part is defective or gets installed incorrectly and that causes damage to a covered component, the dealer can deny coverage for the damaged part. The important protection is that they have to prove the aftermarket part actually caused the problem, not just point at it. So a cold air intake does not void your transmission warranty. To keep yourself covered, hold onto your receipts and keep records of what was installed and when.

Does Insurance Cover Aftermarket Parts?

Quick disclaimer: this is general information, not insurance advice, and the details vary by policy and by state, so confirm with your own insurer.

In most cases, a standard auto policy does not automatically pay to replace custom aftermarket parts beyond a small built-in limit. Insurers price standard coverage around restoring the vehicle to factory condition, so the upgrades you added often fall outside that baseline.

To actually protect your modifications, you usually add what is called custom parts and equipment coverage, an endorsement that rides on top of your comprehensive and collision coverage. Separately, and confusingly, some insurers will use aftermarket rather than OEM parts to repair your vehicle after a claim unless your policy specifies otherwise. The practical takeaways are simple: if you have put real money into modifications, tell your insurer, keep documentation and photos, and ask specifically about custom parts coverage before you need it.

Who Should Consider Aftermarket Parts

If you are repairing a vehicle on a budget, a quality aftermarket replacement part is often the smart, cost-effective choice. If you are customizing or chasing more performance, aftermarket is usually your only option, since the factory does not sell those upgrades. And if you drive an older vehicle where OEM parts are scarce or expensive, aftermarket can keep it on the road affordably. The main time to lean OEM is when you want an exact-original restoration or you are being cautious about a specific warranty situation.

Common Questions About Aftermarket Parts

Are aftermarket parts as good as OEM?

It depends entirely on the brand. Reputable aftermarket parts frequently match or even exceed OEM quality, while cheap no-name parts may not hold up. The label itself does not tell you much, so the brand’s reputation and whether the part is correct for your vehicle matter far more than whether it is technically aftermarket.

Do aftermarket parts void your warranty?

No, not automatically. Federal law protects you here, and a dealer cannot void your warranty just because an aftermarket part is present. They can only deny a claim if they prove that a specific part caused the failure, and even then only for that component. Keeping your receipts and maintenance records is the best way to protect yourself.

How much does aftermarket parts installation cost?

It depends on the part, how complex the install is, and your specific vehicle. Some parts are quick bolt-ons, while others need wiring, a tune, or an alignment afterward, which changes the labor involved. Rather than quote blind, we confirm fitment and tell you exactly what the job involves before we start. Every install here is quote-based.

Got a Part? Let’s Get It On Right.

Whether you sourced a part online or you are planning a build and want it done correctly the first time, we can help. Bring the part along with your year, make, and model to our Lewis Center or Hilliard location, and we will confirm it fits your vehicle, tell you what the install involves, and give you a straight quote before any work begins. We would rather flag a problem before the part goes on than after, and we install quality parts whether or not we sold them to you.

Great listeners and understand the big picture of my vision. Good advice and follow through with timing. Work to help find the components to complete the project at good value without sacrificing quality. I still have several mods scheduled for installation but thought I'd share the process this far.

Got a spray in bed liner done here and scheduling and process was super easy there was a small section that was torn after install and after they took a look they had me bring back in right away to fix it and even said if they needed to take the bed cover off that they'd handle everything. Friendly service and made sure everything was right.
