At Pickups Plus Cars, engine service covers diagnostics, tune-ups, fluid services, and repairs for trucks, SUVs, and cars across Central Ohio. It's part of our broader engine and drivetrain work at both our Lewis Center and Hilliard locations.

    We've been working on engines for 25+ years, and our approach hasn't changed: diagnose accurately before recommending any repair. We follow manufacturer recommendations and adjust service intervals based on how the vehicle is actually used.

    Engine Diagnostics

    When the check engine light comes on, a rough idle starts, or power drops off unexpectedly, the right first step is a proper diagnostic. We use computerized scanning alongside physical inspection and, when needed, a test drive to confirm the cause. We've seen vehicles come in for what owners assumed was a major engine problem that turned out to be a failed sensor or a vacuum leak. Diagnosing accurately saves time and money.

    Engine Repairs

    Engine repairs range from replacing a leaking gasket to addressing issues with the cooling system, fuel injection, or timing components. We assess what's needed after the diagnostic and recommend only what the vehicle actually requires.     • How do I know if my engine problem is minor or serious?

      The honest answer is that you often can't tell without a diagnostic. A check engine light can be triggered by something as minor as a loose gas cap or as serious as a misfiring cylinder or failing catalytic converter. A rough idle can come from a vacuum leak, a bad sensor, or internal engine wear. We run diagnostics first and give you a clear picture of what's actually happening before recommending any work. If it's something minor, you'll know that upfront.

    • How often should I get an oil change?

      For most modern vehicles using full synthetic oil, every 5,000 to 7,500 miles is a reasonable interval. Some manufacturers recommend up to 10,000 miles with synthetic, but that assumes normal driving conditions. Vehicles that tow, idle frequently, operate in extreme temperatures, or accumulate mostly short trips are harder on oil and benefit from shorter intervals. We'll give you a specific recommendation based on your vehicle and how you use it.

    • Can skipping routine maintenance really cause major engine damage?

      Yes, and it happens more gradually than most people expect. Skipping oil changes allows contaminants to build up and oil to lose its ability to lubricate effectively, which accelerates wear on internal components. Neglected air filters reduce combustion efficiency. Fouled spark plugs cause misfires that stress the catalytic converter over time. None of these failures happen immediately, which makes it easy to rationalize skipping a service, but the repair costs that result are almost always more expensive than the maintenance would have been.

    • What's the difference between engine repair and an engine build?

      Engine repair addresses specific failures or worn components within an otherwise functional engine: a leaking gasket, a failing fuel injector, or a cooling system issue. The goal is to restore the engine to proper working condition. An engine build is a more involved process where the engine is disassembled, machined, and reassembled to modified or upgraded specifications, typically for vehicles being built for demanding use.     • My check engine light came on but my car seems fine. Do I still need to get it checked?

      Yes. A check engine light that triggers without obvious symptoms is easy to ignore, but it's the vehicle flagging something that needs attention before it becomes a noticeable problem. Some codes are genuinely minor, but others indicate issues that will get worse and more expensive if left alone. The only way to know which situation you're in is to run a diagnostic. We'll tell you exactly what the code means and whether it needs immediate attention or can wait.
